Introduction to Centrifuge Rotor Types

There are two main types of common centrifuge rotors: fixed-angle rotors and swing-out rotors. The main differences between the two are introduced as follows:

Fixed-angle Rotor:

A fixed-angle rotor is designed such that the central axis of the centrifuge tube forms a fixed angle of mostly 14 to 45 degrees with the rotating shaft; the larger the angle, the better the separation effect.

This type of rotor features a low center of gravity and stable operation, enabling rapid collection of precipitates. During sedimentation, particles collide against the centrifuge tube wall along the direction of centrifugal force before sliding down to the tube bottom to form a pellet. The wall effect tends to cause intense convection inside the tube, which impairs the separation performance.

Swing-out Rotor:

Also known as a swing-out rotor, it consists of a horizontal rotor body, hanging baskets and adapters. When stationary, the hanging baskets remain vertical; during operation, they swing out to a horizontal position at a right angle to the bearing, allowing samples to settle and concentrate at the bottom of centrifuge tubes.

Its advantage is that the relative position of components in the sample against the tube wall remains unchanged throughout and after centrifugation, delivering a better separation effect than fixed-angle rotors.
